LOY KRATHONG FESTIVAL
Loy
Krathong is a traditional festival
which takes place all over
the country on the full moon night of the 12 th lunar month. During this
month, the waterways are brimful as aresult of
many months of tropical rainfall. The people are at a lax period after months
of hard work. This is a time for festivities
designed to beg for forgiveness from Khongkha, the river goddess. They
make ornate floral floats which resemble lotus
flowers and load them with incense sticks, candles and perhaps coins. Sometimes
they include finger nail and hair
clippings too. The floats are then sent downstream as a gift in homage
to the mother source of water. Occasionally
the hopeful destination for the floats is said to be the Lord Buddha's
foot imprint at the bank of Namthanathi River.
This festival shows that Thai people appreciate the life giving value
of the natural water sources.
It demonstrates how closely the
Thai society coexists with nature.
