rainfall of the year is expected. During this period, the farmers begin to prepare their fields in readiness for the rain. It is believed that the celestial being, known as "Phaya Thaen", is the one who can command the rain to fall and to make thunder. The festival is therefore designed to propitiate this deity. Large home made rockets are sent high up into the sky to urge him to make rain.
